According to Islam, Jesus Christ was merely a prophet. He did miracles and prophesied but the basis upon which Christianity is founded they dispute. What it really boils down to is, did Jesus Christ atone for the sins of the world and was he crucified and resurrected? Islam would have you believe that it didn’t happen and that the Koran was sent to Mohammed by the angel Gabriel to correct Christianity. So the question I have is this, which one is correct? Who is right? I mean after all you have two different sacred texts in direct contradiction with each…

Jesus Christ, not the Savior of the World? is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

I am taking a course during winter break titled “Sacred Texts” now I was lucky enough to take the class when it is talking about the Koran and Islam. I find this very interesting, except the text that they choose title, “The Vision of Islam” by Murata & Chittick is VERY confusing (either that or Islam it’s self is confusing, the jury is still out on this one). Now I have a background in religious studies as I have studied my religion all my life. I have even researched faiths other than my own. I am no expert but I am…

Islam: not your everyday jihadist believes is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

As we end this year and this decade I wanted to take a moment and reflect on this past year. This year we have been through a whole lot of “change” some good and some not so good. In my opinion our president made promises that he has not kept (no surprise there as most of them don’t). As a society we have suffered greatly at the hands of greedy and unethical individuals and companies that feel that they are entitled to more than their fair share. We have seen actors, directors, politicians all behaving badly, this isn’t unusual per…

Reflections for 2009 and the decade is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

We still had no idea what to get my brother in-law or my father in-law. I had some ideas but for the most part they are incredibly hard to shop for, not because I didn’t want to get them gifts but because my father in-law has everything he wants and my brother in-law isn’t very obvious in what he wants. I knew that my father in-law would be the hardest and that is why I left…

A little Christmas Miracle is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

I took a little break from blogging, mostly because I wasn’t really feeling the need to share everything that was going on, but also because I have been struggling immensely with what to do with my major. I have decided that for the sake of my family and the sake of my sanity that I am going to change my major to Criminology and Justice Studies. Although this major will be significantly more “interesting” to me it will also be more difficult to find a job that would utilize my degree.

Today I am thirty-two years old, it is kind of weird because honestly I don’t feel any different than when I was in my twenty’s. Sure my body isn’t what it used to be but that’s just the way things go. Here are just a few things I’ve learned over the years.

First of all would have to be the importance of being true to yourself. At the end of the day if you aren’t happy with yourself then it is up to you to fix it. Only you are responsible for being happy as no one and nothing…

Here is to thirty-two years is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

It wasn’t something huge at least in the grand scheme of things but I feel that it certainly deserves acknowledgement and praise.

Today my wife and I were watching Christmas movies; it was a nice way to spend Sunday. It started with an 80’s classic “Smokey Mountain Christmas” with Dolly Parton and Lee Majors. I liked this movie because although the focus wasn’t on the Savior it was on the family and how it didn’t matter who your family was but rather that you were a part of a family and how you treated your family.

I am sure that most American’s have at least one time in this life heard these words uttered by a commercial or other advertisement for the United States Marine Corps. I find these words to bring comfort to me as I enjoy the freedoms that they work so hard to protect. These brave men and women sacrifice willingly of their time and means to bring the United States of America some of the choicest blessings of ANY nation on the earth. I can think of no other nation that has a military that is composed of men and women so…

The Few. The Proud. After reading a few more blogs I realized that I didn’t do some of them justice. Unfortunately the situation goes both ways, we as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sometimes come off as judgmental. That’s not fair!” Most parents I know including my own say in response, “Life isn’t fair!” By its sheer nature life isn’t fair because what is fair for one person isn’t necessarily fair for another.

In light of all that is going on in the world, I think this subject is one that is appropriate. Often times so many people sit idly by and watch as the decisions of others affect their lives and not necessarily for the good. Then when they don’t like what has happened they sit back and complain about it. It is only when it affects them directly do they start getting involved. Certainly the time to get involved is before you are affected. There is so much room for change but if we let the world go on without saying…

Raising your voice to be heard is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

The shooting at Fort Hood, the office rampage in Florida, the boy who was set on fire for $40, the girl who was gang raped in front of the Richmond High School, and so many more than I can’t list them all.

I remember when I was a child and everything was new and exciting. On the first day of school, I would be so excited that I couldn’t sleep. Occasionally, I would wake up take a shower and get dressed for school and then go back to bed and lie there not being able to go back to sleep. School then was amazing, I couldn’t wait to go. I am still a bit of the same way. I still get excited for school, except now I sleep just fine. I know it is my metabolism because I have eaten the same way for many years. I did not exercise regularly for quite a while. Don’t get me wrong I like to exercise; I just have a hard time getting started. Getting out the door is the hardest part. Once I am out, I am really good about sticking to it. Now, mind you because I haven’t run in many…

Walk before Running is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

Often times I will seek out blogs that have a Mormon theme to them or perhaps discuss something about my faith. Quite frequently I find anti-Mormon blogs. I find it interesting how incredibly spiteful most of them are and about how bound and determined they are to prove us wrong. There was one particular blog who said that if the National Geographic Association didn’t know of any archaeological information linking The Book of Mormon to South America that it didn’t exist. I challenged their argument based on the fact that just because they said it doesn’t mean it is the absolute truth.…

They can’t handle the truth is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

No I am not talking about the store, although that would certainly be easier to hit. We now have a new professor for our Computer Science Lab. She is now trying to teach the way she thinks is best. I can’t blame her however it is certainly making life even more difficult than it was already. Her expectations are shall we say interesting. It has been like this all semester. It seems that no matter what we try the target keeps moving. I am grateful that the gospel isn’t like academia or the work force. The target never moves, it…

Moving Target is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

I am trying to decide on a different major. I thought I could pass calculus but much to my regret I cannot. I have attempted it several times and have met with the same result each time. I can’t go onto the other parts of computer science without passing calculus. There are several benefits to changing majors of which the most important is I can graduate earlier than I could with computer science. Now the real question is what major should I choose? I am thinking about Political Science and then heading on to law school. If I do that…

Major Changes is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

The story of Abinadi is one of my favorite accounts in The Book of Mormon. Abinadi was a prophet of God called to preach the gospel to King Noah and his people. King Noah was a very wicked king who had set up his own religion that would allow him to do as he pleased. They would flatter him and tell what he was doing was right even when it was wrong. Abinadi had the courage to stand up to the King and tell him and his people what they were doing was wrong. He even went to the grave…

Standing alone in a crowd is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

We are here so that we might have joy. I strongly believe that joy is greater than happiness. Happiness is what you feel in the moment; it is somewhat temporary and fleeting. You see he interpreted the homework assignment one way and I interpreted it another. It wasn’t explicitly stated and he didn’t clarify. Now mind you he hasn’t once clarified anything that could be ambiguous in the homework. The question is if there isn’t a clear cut answer to something that is vague how can you be wrong? I mean besides the whole he is the teacher and I am the student…

Interpretation is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

There is quite a bit of speculation about the logistics and necessity of baptism. We learn from Peter, who said, “…Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38) So we see that baptism is required for the remission of sins, but why?

I was reading a blog that discussed the “differences” between mainstream Christianity and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The controversy lies in the fact that most of Christianity, denies that prophets can exist. They believe that The Bible is the absolute and final word of God. It is the cannon and is closed. Yet, it is apparent that although they read The Bible they do not believe everything in the bible. For instance in Amos it clearly states, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos…

Prophets is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

I ask this question because it astounds me in today’s world at how the moral compasses of so many people have gotten completely turned upside down. Where south is north and east is west. The world is morally depraved and it is a sad and lonesome sight, to feel like one of the only (relatively speaking) voices of reason in this amazingly corrupt world. I am not saying there aren’t good people out there because I believe with all my heart that there are, however it seems that as a people we are becoming that very thing that we abhor.…

Where have all the good men/women gone? is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

A line from the song goes, “There comes a time in everyone’s life, when all you can see are the years passing by.” Trust me I am feeling that way, I am nearly thirty-two and it seems like time has sped up. It feels like life is just passing me by. Don’t get me wrong I am very happy with my life I would just like it to slow down a little bit. I wish I could have the time back that I’ve lost. One of my favorite messages to give was one where I begin by juggling. The children loved the juggling but I also would teach a gospel principle. Eventually I would drop the balls and along with it I would share this scripture: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27) Life is a lot like…

Peace is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

It was wonderful to see two people make this type of commitment to each other especially in this day and age where marriage is usually only done when there are no other options. It was a beautiful day, with just a slight bit of haze. My wife and I had a hard time getting ready, it just seemed like everything was taking forever. He was a dear man who is survived by his sweet wife Wanda. I met him approximately 2 years ago and have had several occasions to interact with him. I didn’t know him well but I knew him well enough. I am saddened for his wife and her loss. They have been married for 60 years! He was 84 years old and was fighting cancer; he died September 30, 2009 and was buried today.…

Foster Parrent is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

Perhaps I should have led with this, but here it is now none-the-less. I have a testimony of the truthfulness of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. As a young boy he had the courage to pray to find out which church was true. The following is Joseph’s account: “For, notwithstanding the great love which the converts to these different faiths expressed at the time of their conversion, and the great zeal manifested by the respective clergy, who were active in getting up and promoting this extraordinary scene…

Testimony is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

Today is the first day of 179th Semi-Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints. Every six months the church holds a General Conference, this conference is held to build and uplift the Saints. It is much like when Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount. It is also like when King Benjamin addressed his people in The Book of Mormon. The leaders of our church instruct and teach us principles of the gospel. Like apostles and prophets of old they give us God’s will for our lives for the upcoming time. We sustain the general leadership…

179th Semi-Annual General Conference is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

Repentance often gets a bad connotation. It usually is regarded as something painful or otherwise unpleasant. To say that most people aren’t exactly fond of repenting is an understatement. I know that in my life I have to overcome the same negative connotations just like everyone else. The nature of repentance is change, but it isn’t just any change. In the world today there seems to be a pervasive attitude that it is okay to not have faith. I’d like to take a closer look at what faith really is: it is simply a belief.

You know this past year we held elections where we voted and Barack Obama won. He promised a campaign of change. The interesting thing is that his changes although perhaps welcome to some people aren’t the changes that are going to create the greatest amount of joy in the world. You see he is trying to fix a system that isn’t necessarily broke. The people running it are fundamentally unhappy with their lives. When that occurs, no amount of change is going to ever be enough. Because it doesn’t matter how often you move or where you move to, if you…

Be the Change – Be the Joy is a post from: Musings of An Intellectual Mind

I hope that I can bring a different and new perspective to current events, perhaps even events in your lives. I hope that my journey in life can help others to overcome the adversity in their lives. Perhaps most importantly I hope to bring a voice of reason to what appears to be an unscrupulous world that celebrates evil and promotes bad.
